It’s heating up and there’s little more refreshing than a dip in the pool. A Saturday spent luxuriating in the sun is one of the best parts of the upcoming summer season, but as anyone with color-treated hair knows, it can be quite the double-edged sword.

Emerging from the pool with your gorgeous, sunny locks turned green and dull is a quick way to turn your relaxing day into a hair nightmare. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce the damage and protect yourself from a sunny Saturday ruined.

First things first; presoak your hair with clean water.

This may seem counterintuitive, but wetting your hair in the shower before you jump in the pool allows your hair to absorb less of the damaging chlorine. It takes virtually no time for ample benefit – perfect for those of us who don’t want to be bothered with a complicated routine.

Your hair needs sunscreen, too.

It’s universally acknowledged too much sun is terrible for your skin, but few people consider the toll it takes on your hair. We recommend a product that contains UVA or UVB rays; the aptly named Sun Catcher by R+Co, a leave-in conditioner, is one of our favorites.

Put your hair up.

Sometimes the best solution is the simplest. Tying your hair up in a bun keeps it out of the water as you leisurely wade about.

Shampoo and condition – even if you’re exhausted.

A day spent sun soaked is exhausting. All you want to do is lay on the couch and watch a movie or read a book. Don’t. Not until you’ve both shampooed and conditioned your hair. Choose a hydrating shampoo designed specifically for blondes for maximum impact. The neuBlonde Platinum Shampoo and neuMoisture Conditioner by Neuma will go a long way in toning your color and adding back much needed, stripped away moisture.

If all else fails, call us.

We’re all fallible and sometimes we’re going to forego our routine, particularly on a hot summer day when the promise of the cool water of the pool is too much to resist. If you find you’ve damaged your hair, allow one of our professionals to get back on track. Book online at or give us a call in the Old City of Knoxville, Tennessee at 865.523.5569.

Happy swimming, #LoxStars!

When our CEO and founder Brynn opened Lox in 2006, she had been a vegan for nearly a decade. She was troubled by the waste in the beauty industry and wanted to affect change in a meaningful way. This led her to partner with Green Circle and make Lox Salon the first Green Circle salon in the state of Tennessee.

The beauty industry creates over 877 pounds of waste every single minute. We find this number unconscionable.

Thankfully, Green Circle has given our salon and others the opportunity to mitigate and substantially reduce this number. As Waste Warriors, we are able to recycle and recover 95% of our beauty waste.

According to their website, Green Circle was “created by our Founder and CEO alongside beauty industry leaders, our award-winning program¬†empowers salons to offset their emissions and recover up to 95% of their beauty waste.¬†That includes previously unrecoverable materials and hard-to-recycle items like hair clippings, foils, excess hair color, aerosol cans, and color tubes.” Green Circle uses hair clippings to create hair mats that are in turn used to clean up oil spills, while excess color is repurposed into clean energy.

Impacting the health of the world in a positive way is one of our most important tenants and we pledge to continue this mission. For more information about how we do this, feel free to reach out via our Instagram.

If you’ve had your hair color treated before, you’ve likely been frustrated when you notice it begins fading after a short time. This is because color treated hair is much different than your virgin hair and, as such, requires different upkeep.

Don’t go home and wash your hair. The cuticle of your hair has been opened to allow the color to take. With the cuticle still open, the color can run and you’ll see your hair fade right away. Wait three days before you shampoo your hair; this will give the cuticle time to close and help keep your color fresh between appointments.

Speaking of showering, turn the hot water down. We all love a nice, hot shower, especially in the cold winter months, but the hot water is opening your cuticle allowing all that color you love to literally and figuratively wash down the drain. The colder the water, the tighter the cuticle layer will remain.

Color safe shampoo and conditioner is key. If your shampoo and conditioner isn’t color safe, you’re stripping away the color you spent hours and dollars on at the salon. We recommend Neuma Beauty or R+Co shampoo and conditioner to maintain your color treated hair. (Bonus: Use a clarifying shampoo the day before your next color appointment to strip your hair of oils that may hinder the color.) Both are vegan and color safe.

Wash your hair less. The less you wash your hair, the better your color. Dry shampoo is a great tool for in between days; generally, every 2-3 days is safe but we have guests that wash as rarely as once a week.

Heat protectant is your friend. Before blow drying or or styling your hair, apply a heat protectant. Both Neuma Beauty and R+Co have great heat protectant products.

If you’re interested in color treating your hair, we recommend booking a free consultation with one of our trained stylists. Coloring your hair at home may seem convenient and cost effective, but unfortunately it often leads to damaged hair and a trip to the salon for an even costlier color correction that could’ve been avoided.

Happy coloring!

Our team of Lox Stars was on hand at the Women’s Spectacular last Saturday. We greatly enjoyed the opportunity to interact with the community as well as better acquaint ourselves with local businesses in the area.

Trained stylists offered a selection of the many services we provide in the salon, including hair extensions, tinsel, scalp massages and free consultations. Visitors to the Lox Salon booth entered to win prizes, including a basket of hair goods and gift cards valued at $100 each.

Engaging in the community is one of the tentpoles of our salon’s business. We appreciate each and every person that stopped by the booth and the organizers behind the event for graciously hosting us.

If you would like to learn more about some of the services that were offered that day, please contact us at or by phone at 865.523.5569.

As a society and as a salon, we love hair color! Light, dark, rainbow: we love it all! There are unfortunate realities when it comes to color though. At the end of the day, you are putting strong chemicals on your hair and altering it on a molecular level. As intimidating as that may sound, color doesn’t have to be a scary or damaging process. There are several guidelines you can abide by if you color your hair to protect it and keep it as healthy as possible.

Regular hair cuts! Trimming your hair on a regular schedule will help prevent breakage on your ends and prevent breakage from moving up your hair strands. 6 – 8 weeks is recommended.
Cool water! Rinsing your hair with cool to cold water will preserve your color longer and will be more gentile on your hair. Hot water opens your hair’s cuticle letting your color fall out and making your hair more susceptible to breakage.
Color safe shampoo and conditioner! Using the right products will go a long way with your hair. We provide color safe shampoos and conditioners during your service and we have several options available for retail from Neuma and Pulp Riot.
Conditioning mask! Last but certainly not least, we recommend during your color service to also receive a conditioning mask. It’s as simple as sitting for an additional 5- 10 minutes at the shampoo bowl! You can also add a conditioning treatment onto a hair cut appointment or even a blowout appointment. For this service we use Oligo Blacklight Intensive Replenishing Mask. Specifically designed for color treated hair, this strengthening mask uses the power of argan oil and 11 amino acids to moisturize and repair while also increasing shine and color retention. It will bring life back into your hair! Love it and can’t get enough? Not only is this mask available for purchase but it is also our March product of the month! Buy this mask during the month of March and receive 10% off!

You love your colored hair, so act like it! We want to help you have your dream hair so book a conditioning treatment asap! You can do so by calling, email, or the Book Now tab above.

In the beauty world it can be challenging to find a vegan version of every product you need. A smoothing treatment that doesn’t contain keratin from an animal and that actually works is a rarity. After research and trial runs, we have found one that we absolutely love and clients are loving too! Introducing OXO Organic Smoothing Treatment! Formaldehyde, ammonia, and sulfur free; this smoothing treatment is the healthiest choice for smoother, straighter, and more manageable hair. While anti-bacterial and anti-static, this treatment also moisturizes and rebuilds your cell structures.
Being a vegan salon is a priority for us and we are so happy to be able to provide these services to our community.
