Blondes Beware: It’s Pool Season

It’s heating up and there’s little more refreshing than a dip in the pool. A Saturday spent luxuriating in the sun is one of the best parts of the upcoming summer season, but as anyone with color-treated hair knows, it can be quite the double-edged sword.

Emerging from the pool with your gorgeous, sunny locks turned green and dull is a quick way to turn your relaxing day into a hair nightmare. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce the damage and protect yourself from a sunny Saturday ruined.

First things first; presoak your hair with clean water.

This may seem counterintuitive, but wetting your hair in the shower before you jump in the pool allows your hair to absorb less of the damaging chlorine. It takes virtually no time for ample benefit – perfect for those of us who don’t want to be bothered with a complicated routine.

Your hair needs sunscreen, too.

It’s universally acknowledged too much sun is terrible for your skin, but few people consider the toll it takes on your hair. We recommend a product that contains UVA or UVB rays; the aptly named Sun Catcher by R+Co, a leave-in conditioner, is one of our favorites.

Put your hair up.

Sometimes the best solution is the simplest. Tying your hair up in a bun keeps it out of the water as you leisurely wade about.

Shampoo and condition – even if you’re exhausted.

A day spent sun soaked is exhausting. All you want to do is lay on the couch and watch a movie or read a book. Don’t. Not until you’ve both shampooed and conditioned your hair. Choose a hydrating shampoo designed specifically for blondes for maximum impact. The neuBlonde Platinum Shampoo and neuMoisture Conditioner by Neuma will go a long way in toning your color and adding back much needed, stripped away moisture.

If all else fails, call us.

We’re all fallible and sometimes we’re going to forego our routine, particularly on a hot summer day when the promise of the cool water of the pool is too much to resist. If you find you’ve damaged your hair, allow one of our professionals to get back on track. Book online at Vagaro.com or give us a call in the Old City of Knoxville, Tennessee at 865.523.5569.

Happy swimming, #LoxStars!
